This day is celebrated in honor of Jupiter Hammon, the first African American to publish poetry in the United States.
Literature. If you're in University or other Elementary, Middle, or High Schools... consider sharing some other influential black authors, or talk about their contributions. Share them on social media with the #BlackPoetryDay hashtags.
Government. It's important to discuss why the evolution of colored contributions took so long, and talking about it openly on social media helps everyone involved heal and understand better.
Non-Educational. That's OKAY. If you're an author, a content marketer, a social media guru, or even an intern at a law firm: we all write. Poetry is writing, and what we do as content creators and markets is an art form too! Think where we'd be without them. Celebrate by posting fun facts, your favorite poems, or create videos with Wave to commemorate those who paved the way for us. Get social!
